FAQ - Balusters

What is a baluster and what function does it have in a staircase railing? +

A baluster is the vertical element between the stair tread or base rail and the handrail. It provides fall protection and gives the entire railing stability. At the same time, it shapes the look of the staircase because its form and material are highly visible.

What types of balusters are available and how do they differ? +

Typical options include round balusters, profiled balusters, and combinations of wood and stainless steel. Round balusters look simple and modern, while profiled balusters suit classic or turned staircases. Wood stainless steel variants combine a warm wood appearance with a clean, modern accent.

What spacing between balusters is permitted and sensible? +

For stairs, a common safety rule is a maximum baluster spacing of 12 cm so that children in particular cannot slip through or get their head stuck. If you want to be extra safe, plan the spacing a bit smaller, especially in homes with children.

Which wood species are available for balusters and how do I choose the right one? +

Common wood species include beech, pine, oak, maple, as well as beech in white and beech in black. Beech is very sturdy and looks calm and even, pine feels warm and natural, oak is especially durable with a distinctive grain, and maple adds a light, elegant look. The best approach is to match the balusters to the handrail, newel posts, and overall stair style so everything fits together harmoniously.

How are balusters installed and what should you pay attention to? +

Balusters are fixed at the bottom to the tread or base rail and at the top to the handrail, usually with tenons, dowels, or screws depending on the system. What matters is perfectly even spacing and a vertical alignment so the railing is stable and visually clean. Plan the number of balusters so the spacing stays consistently under 12 cm and no uneven gaps appear.
