Beech Handrail – stable, elegant, and versatile

A beech wood handrail combines reliable safety with timeless elegance. With its light reddish color, smooth surface, and high strength, it fits seamlessly into both modern and classic living concepts. Whether along staircases, in hallways, or open galleries – a beech handrail not only provides a secure grip but also serves as a high-quality design element for interiors.

What makes a beech handrail special?

Beech wood is one of the hardest and most durable hardwoods in Central Europe. It features a particularly dense, fine-pored structure, is extremely dimensionally stable, and stands out with its even, elegant grain. The wood’s natural color creates a warm, inviting atmosphere and blends well with various interior styles. At Treppenshop Dresden, we primarily use beech wood from sustainable local forestry – ensuring quality and responsible manufacturing.

What variants are the beech handrails available in?

Our beech handrails are highly configurable and can be tailored to your requirements. Not only can you choose the shape and dimensions, but you can also select a suitable surface treatment – depending on your taste and intended use.

The following profile shapes are available:

  • Round
  • Square
  • Square rounded
  • Omega
  • Oval

The length of the handrail can be selected freely between 10 cm and 450 cm. Additionally, five diameters are available for the round handrails: 35 mm, 40 mm, 42 mm, 45 mm, or 50 mm. All square, oval, and omega handrails are also available in various variants and sizes.

You can choose between three surface options:

  • Raw – for individual further treatment by yourself
  • Oiled – enhances the grain and protects the wood
  • Lacquered – especially low-maintenance and smooth

On request, the handrail can be provided with a milled groove – ideal if you want to fit it precisely onto an existing railing. Alternatively, it can be easily mounted to the wall using handrail brackets. Suitable brackets can be ordered directly – they are perfectly matched to the material, shape, and diameter of your handrail.

Are beech handrails suitable for outdoor use?

A beech handrail is not suitable for outdoor use. Although the wood is very hard and durable, it is sensitive to moisture and weather conditions. When exposed to heavy moisture, beech may swell, shrink, or even crack. Even with surface treatment, permanent protection is not guaranteed outdoors. We therefore recommend using it exclusively in protected indoor areas.

Typical locations for beech handrails

Thanks to its warm appearance, uniform structure, and high load capacity, a beech handrail is an excellent choice for many indoor areas. They are versatile and meet both functional and design requirements.

Typical areas of application include:

  • As stair railings in residential buildings, public facilities, or commercial properties
  • Along hallways, staircases, and passageways to ensure a secure grip on all levels
  • In open-plan spaces like galleries, lofts, or raised platforms, where it adds structure and visual alignment
  • In building entrances and access areas, e.g., along wall sections or intermediate steps
  • As a design element that stylishly complements both modern and classic interiors while offering safety

Whether in a living area, a medical office, a business, or a public institution – the beech handrail impresses with its combination of stability, aesthetics, and adaptability.

How do you properly care for a beech handrail?

A beech handrail stands out not only for its elegant appearance but also for its easy maintenance. To ensure the wood remains beautiful and functional over time, you should follow a few care steps depending on the surface treatment.

Regular cleaning

Dust and light dirt can be easily removed with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For heavier soiling, use a mild soap solution. It’s important not to use harsh or abrasive cleaners – they could damage the surface or dry out the wood. Be sure to dry the handrail afterward to avoid moisture stains.

Caring for oiled beech handrails

Oiled surfaces require occasional refreshing. Depending on wear – for example, in high-traffic areas or open transitions – re-oiling as needed is recommended. Use a suitable indoor wood oil. Apply the oil thinly with a soft cloth or brush, let it soak in, and polish off any excess oil shortly after. Re-oiling protects the surface from wear, enhances the natural grain, and makes the wood more resistant to moisture and daily use.

Caring for lacquered beech handrails

Lacquered handrails require significantly less care, as the sealed surface repels moisture and dirt well. To maintain the shine and surface, you can occasionally use a soft cloth and a bit of furniture polish. Avoid aggressive polishes containing solvents. Small scratches or dull spots can be selectively treated with suitable lacquer.

Caring for raw beech handrails

If you opt for an untreated, raw version, we recommend treating the wood yourself before using it for the first time. Depending on the desired finish, you can treat the handrail with:

  • Wood oil for a natural, breathable surface,
  • Hard wax oil for added durability and a silky sheen, or
  • Lacquer for a smooth, robust seal.

Since our handrails are delivered pre-sanded, we only recommend thoroughly removing the dust. Then the handrail is ready for finishing.

With the right care – tailored to the specific surface – your beech handrail will remain beautiful, pleasant to the touch, and reliable for many years to come.
