Handrail for Elders
Handrails for Seniors: More Safety and Accessibility for Your Home
Most people desire to live independently and self-determined in their own homes for as long as possible as they age. A central component of this accessible living is fall prevention. Stairs, in particular, pose increasing risks over the years. Our custom-made handrail for seniors offers the necessary support to prevent serious accidents and reliably secure everyday mobility.
As your experienced partner, we at Treppenshop Dresden offer you individually configurable solutions. Our senior-friendly handrails combine stability with an elegant look that blends harmoniously into your living environment. From the very first step, we give you back that good feeling of safety.
Why an Accessible Handrail is Essential in Old Age
With increasing age, the body and fitness often change unnoticed. The sense of balance decreases, muscle strength wanes, and eyesight also diminishes in low light. A secure hold without assistance becomes increasingly difficult. An accessible handrail compensates for these deficits and immediately catches any uncertainties.
In addition to the purely physical benefits, the psychological factor plays a crucial role. For many older people, the fear of falling leads them to avoid stairs or move insecurely, which actually increases the risk of a fall. A continuous handrail for seniors provides renewed confidence. The certainty of being able to support oneself firmly and stably at any time reduces fears and ensures noticeably better quality of life. Timely provision ensures that your home remains a safe place in the future.
The Right Solutions for Every Area
Every house and apartment is unique, just like the requirements for accessibility. Whether in a bright hallway, on a wet outdoor staircase, or in a damp bathroom: optimal protection requires the right material in the right place. For our constructions, we consistently rely on two proven, high-quality materials:
- Wooden handrails made of cozy solid wood
- High-precision, rust-proof stainless steel handrails
Both materials can be tailored exactly to your structural conditions and can be individually supplemented with our large selection of handrail brackets.
Safe on Every Step: Handrails for Indoor Stairs
Indoors, the focus is not only on pure function but also on coziness. A handrail for seniors made of high-quality solid wood exudes an inviting atmosphere and always feels pleasant to the touch. For modern staircases, the elegance of stainless steel is a great option, characterized by its extreme durability. Through millimeter-precise custom manufacturing in our workshop, the chosen model adapts perfectly to the course of your stairs.
Weatherproof and Fall-Proof: Handrails for the Outdoors
The outdoor area places particularly high demands on fall prevention. Wet leaves in autumn, frost in winter, or a sudden rain shower quickly turn entrance stairs and garden paths into dangerous slippery surfaces. Here, a weather-resistant outdoor handrail is absolutely the right choice.
Support in Wet Areas: The Bathroom Handrail for Seniors
Due to wet tiles, soap residue, and high humidity, the bathroom is considered one of the most critical danger zones in the household. A handrail in the bathroom specifically mitigates these risks. As a stable wall or grab bar in the shower, bathtub, or next to the toilet, it offers the perfect aid for standing up. A senior handrail guarantees a firm, slip-resistant grip even with wet hands. For this, we exclusively recommend handrails made of stainless steel or oiled oak and pine, as these can be used with moisture without any problems.
Better Orientation in the Dark: Handrails with Integrated LED Lighting
Especially in the evening hours or during nighttime trips through the house, stairs become a tripping hazard without sufficient light. Since the eyes need longer to adapt to sudden darkness in old age, we offer handrails with integrated LED lighting. The lights, discreetly embedded in the underside of the profile, illuminate both the individual steps and the gripping area completely glare-free. This perfectly compensates for fading eyesight and ensures maximum step safety at night.
Criteria for a Senior-Friendly Handrail According to DIN 18040
For a handrail for seniors to guarantee genuine accessibility in everyday life, basic ergonomic and legal criteria must be met. The DIN standard 18040 defines how a safety grab bar must be designed to offer optimal benefit to elderly or disabled people.
The most important safety criteria at a glance:
- Ergonomic round profile: The diameter must be between 30 and 45 mm. Only then can the hand completely enclose the handrail to catch the entire body weight in the event of a fall.
- Tactile handrail extension: The handrail must not end abruptly with the last step. It must extend at least 30 cm beyond the first and last step so that seniors can find a secure hold before stepping onto and beyond the end of the stairs.
- Safety ends: The ends of the handrail must be rounded and curved towards the wall or downwards. This effectively prevents wide jacket sleeves or bags from getting caught, causing a loss of balance.
- Continuous guidance: The handrail should run continuously across landings, corners, and intermediate platforms so that the firm grip never has to be released at any point.
Handrails Subsidized by the Long-Term Care Insurance Fund (Pflegekasse)
Retrofitting a property with accessible elements involves costs - but you do not have to bear this investment in your safety completely alone. If a care level (Pflegegrad) has been assigned, the long-term care insurance fund can grant a subsidy of up to €4,180 per person in need of care as part of so-called "living environment improvement measures". The prerequisite is generally at least care level 1 and that the measure makes home care possible, eases it, or improves independent living.
If several eligible persons live in a shared apartment, the subsidy can increase to up to €16,720. Important for a smooth process: First request a detailed cost estimate from us and submit it to your care insurance fund for approval before purchasing and before installation begins.
Alternatively or additionally, funding programs from the KfW (Reconstruction Credit Institute) can be considered: Grants for barrier-reducing measures are possible via KfW 455-B "Barrier Reduction - Investment Grant"; a promotional loan can be applied for via KfW 159 "Age-Appropriate Conversion - Loan". Again, the application must fundamentally be submitted before the project begins.

Frequently asked questions from our customers
Before you decide on a specific model, practical questions about installation, funding, or legal requirements often arise. To make planning easier for you, we have clearly answered the most frequent inquiries from our customers.
What does a "barrier-free handrail" mean? +
A handrail is considered barrier-free if it features a closed round profile (optimal grip security), has a sufficient distance from the wall of at least 5 cm, runs without interruption over the entire length of the stairs, and ends safely rounded off against the wall at the ends.
Is a handrail a living environment improvement measure? +
Yes, the installation or retrofitting of handrails falls exactly under the category of living environment improvement measures in the Social Security Code. It serves to reduce barriers, protects against accidents, and demonstrably maintains independence in one's own home.
Is a handrail paid for by the care insurance fund? +
Yes, under certain conditions, the care insurance fund can grant a subsidy. The prerequisite is usually that the affected person has at least care level (Pflegegrad) 1 and that the handrail facilitates home care or improves independent living. As part of the so-called living environment improvement measures, subsidies of up to €4,180 per person in need of care are possible. The application should definitely be submitted to and approved by the care insurance fund before ordering and before installation begins.
At what height should handrails for older people be installed? +
According to current building standards, the optimal and safe installation height is between 85 and 90 cm vertically above the front edge of the step. In this range, the ergonomics are ideal for most people to support themselves stably without excessively bending or stretching their backs.
Why is LED lighting on the handrail so useful in old age? +
Since eyes require significantly more light in old age to detect contours sharply, LED strips in the handrail defuse dangerous dark areas. They directly illuminate the walkway and the gripping area, prevent missteps at night, and offer maximum orientation with minimal power consumption.
